Change Lab
Pause for Thought
The Change Lab is a crucial space for learning, thinking, and reimagining how art and design can be taught in the curriculum through sustainable development.
My fellow students and I collaborated on an exhibition for the Professional Master in Education program. The exhibition displayed the pedagogical approach and artefacts we created as a group in response to the 'Pause for Taught theme.'
Exploring the common theme of "family" has taken us on a profound journey into what we leave behind for future generations. Our investigation is not confined to a single medium. Still, it spans multiple platforms, allowing us to comprehensively delve into the historical, cultural, and environmental factors contributing to our ever-evolving landscape. We have turned our attention to the once-pristine natural spaces known as peatlands, which are still being used as globally transported, shipped, buried, and burned resources.
As we navigated this exploration, we found ourselves questioning the essence of human nature and the delicate boundaries of sustainability. Peatlands, often overlooked in the broader discourse on ecosystems, have captured our focus due to their unique and intricate biodiversity.
They represent vital reservoirs of life, housing many plant and animal species specially adapted to their waterlogged and acidic conditions. The lush vegetation and microbial communities found in peatlands are fascinating and play a crucial role in carbon sequestration, helping to mitigate climate change by locking away substantial amounts of carbon dioxide over centuries. However, the consumption of the landscape has cast a shadow over the once-pristine beauty of peatlands. In the pursuit of economic gain and resource extraction, these fragile ecosystems have been drained, excavated, and exploited. The consequences of these actions have been profound, affecting not only the biodiversity of peatlands but also the global ecosystem.
